The Wordsworth Singers are honoured to have been invited to give a concert as part of the 2010 Dalemain Marmalade Festival, the first time a musical event will have been included.
This fun lunchtime concert, “A Peal of Marmalade”, will include choral and instrumental items with a smile, celebrating marmalade’s exotic origins and variety and its energising taste to start the day. We are delighted to welcome back James Grossmith, Chorus Master of Scottish Opera and former director of our choir, to conduct us in this concert. Some of the choral items will have citrussy overtones, such as an arrangement of Oranges and Lemons especially written for us by Daryl Runswick, who has also arranged music for groups such as The King’s Singers. We will be joined by local instrumentalists and school choirs to perform a Marmalade Suite, commissioned from composer Liz Sharma. The Suite is planned as a fore-runner to a larger-scale work for the 2011 Festival.
Tangy refreshments will also be served!
Further details and ticket information available soon from this website.
Liz Sharma (composer) studied composition with Richard Arnell at the Trinity College of Music. She became Head of Music in comprehensive schools, running choirs, orchestras as well as music for many different ethnic groups, including Indian, Chinese and Somalian children. She achieved a reputation for ‘World Music' and has written books and advised education authorities on the subject. Since 2001 she has worked more flexibly, and has had the time to compose prolifically. Much of her instrumental and vocal music has been performed by adult and youth ensembles. She has composed music for many summer schools, including the Dartington School for the last five years. She was commissioned to set stories to music for Dorset Symphony Orchestra, with Martin Clunes as narrator, with performances in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
