Director of Music

M
ark Hindley began his musical training as a Chorister at Lichfield Cathedral.  It was here that he began to play the organ, progressing to Malvern College before being awarded an Organ Scholarship to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where he studied with David Sanger.  Mark Hindley

He has wide-ranging musical interests.  Much of his time is taken up with conducting and directing.  His background has led naturally to many years of close involvement in church music, holding positions at St Matthew's Church, Northampton, St Paul's Cathedral in Dundee and Great St Mary's Church in Cambridge.

However, his return to Scotland in 2003 to take up the position of Chorusmaster with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) has led to him working mainly in a secular context. As well as training and directing the SCO Chorus, he has worked on several projects with the SCO Education Department both with adults and children. These have included the acclaimed premiere of 'Voice of a City' by Edward Harper and a 'Scrapers and Tooters' workshop in Perth. In 2005 he also directed a choir from Portobello High School together with musicians from the SCO in the first performance of Rory Boyle's 'The Fires of Bride' written as part of the SCO's Composer Laureate for Schools project.  In addition to his work in Scotland, he is also Chorusmaster of Leeds Philharmonic Society, working closely with its Musical Director, David Hill.

He is in demand to train voices all over the UK and has worked with, among others, Huddersfield Choral Society, Northern Sinfonia Chorus, Edinburgh Festival Chorus, RSNO chorus, Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, St Andrews Chorus and Angus Choral Societies. Recently, he has been at the forefront of community singing events at the new Concert Hall in Perth and has lead workshops for all age-groups in Falkirk, Edinburgh and Stirling.

He has also worked extensively in higher education, notably at the Universities of St Andrews and Cambridge.  He combines his choral work with a busy schedule as a freelance organist and harpsichordist. He has been invited to perform in many of the major venues across the UK. He has also appeared in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Poland and the USA.
